The lymphatic system is a crucial part of your immune system that cleans and nourishes cells, removes bodily waste, and carries white blood cells to help prevent infection. Obstructions such as toxins, cellular waste, and fluid can build up when the lymphatic system and lymph nodes fail to properly drain, thus affecting the entire flow of the lymphatic system.
Enter lymphatic drainage – a specialized type of therapy that targets lymphatic flow and breaks apart lymphatic congestion while also draining waste and fluid from the body. Wondering how this applies to skin care?? Keep reading!
Lymphatic Drainage & Skin Care
Traditionally, lymphatic drainage has been used in the medical field to treat lymphedema – a chronic swelling condition that commonly occurs after lymph node removal. However, in recent years, lymphatic drainage has been gaining traction as a viable tool for skin care technicians who use this therapy to stimulate blood circulation, bring nutrients to the skin, and treat conditions such as eczema, rosacea, and acne.
Lymphatic Drainage Before Non-Invasive Cosmetic Procedures
Skin care technicians are also using lymphatic drainage prior to non-invasive cosmetic procedures such as dermal filler, Botox, and laser to promote faster healing and better results. Other benefits include:
- Helps to detoxify the skin
- Decreases inflammation
- Removes unwanted buildup
- Optimizes skin health
Lymphatic Drainage at Skin NV or DIY!
Lymphatic drainage therapy at Skin NV involves using light pressure and gentle movements such as tapping, stroking, rubbing, and pushing. Your skin is then gently stretched in the direction of lymphatic flow to encourage drainage.
Don’t want the spa experience? No problem! Lymphatic drainage is an easy DIY therapy that you can do at home. Just follow these steps:
Step 1: Rest your palms on your stomach and take a deep breath. Breathe out until your stomach is flat. Repeat five to six times.
Step 2: Position yourself to where you are most comfortable. You can either sit, stand, or lie down.
Step 3: Using the palms of your hands, start at your forehead, and while applying gentle pressure, slowly stretch the skin down towards the lymph nodes in your neck. Continue, moving all the way down your face.
Step 4: Use special care around the eyes. As you start to apply pressure under your eyes, switch to your ring finger and use a rolling movement.
Step 5: Repeat the process five times in each area.
