Rihanna, J-Lo, Pharrell, and Alicia Keys are among the most recent celebrities to come out with new lines of skincare. Sure, these products have heavy-hitter names, but are they really worth the hype (and money!)? Not always. Here’s why choosing independent, clinically studied, medical-grade skincare products are worth the investment over celebrity-endorsed lines.
Proven Skincare Ingredients vs. Ingredient Stories
When it comes to marketing skincare, there are two different categories – proven skincare ingredients and ingredient stories. With proven skincare ingredients, there is an abundance of literature documenting the benefits. Ingredient stories include ingredients without tested results but are what help market the product.
With celebrity lines, there’s usually a mix of proven ingredients (for the street cred) and ingredient stories (for the pretty packaging). In medicine, there shouldn’t be just one story or one clinical study. For an ingredient to be effective, it must be evidence-based. So even though a product has a nice “story”, it doesn’t mean it’s effective.
Simplicity
With the abundance of products on the market, skincare has moved away from simplicity into the world of complexity. There are two reasons why this is problematic. First, it can more detrimental than beneficial to the health of your skin. Second, you end up spending a fortune on products you don’t need. To keep your skin healthy and hydrated, you only need effective ingredients that treat your specific skin type and texture. This should not involve 20 different products that are included in celebrity-endorsed lines.
In terms of skincare ingredients, look out for the big three:
- SPF: Critically important for every day (all day!) year-round use, indoors and outdoors.
- Niacinamide: Anti-inflammatory that helps to brighten the skin, available in creams, moisturizers, toners, and cleansers.
- Hyaluronic Acid: Helps trap in the water to the skin, effective for anti-aging.
The Takeaway
The biggest takeaway is that no one skincare line fits all, and you should choose your skincare products based on your individual needs. Just because a celebrity’s name is on a product, it doesn’t mean it will magically cure your skin concerns.
Through marketing, we’re made to believe that the entire line is needed to get results. This is not the case! You do not have to use everything from one line, and in fact, should choose products from multiple lines that meet your individual skincare needs.
So, before you head out to buy J-Lo’s latest product line, do your research on the ingredients, identify your skincare needs, and choose products that address those concerns. In the end, you just want products that leave your skin happy, healthy, and hydrated.
