It’s easy to get confused with the many different anti-aging treatments and procedures out there – Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin being among some of the most confusing! Don’t get overwhelmed! Here we take a closer look at these three procedures and identify how they are both very similar yet also very different.
But First…How They’re Similar
Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin are all injectable neuromodulators, meaning they can temporarily alter the nerve impulses of targeted muscles, therefore reducing or eliminating contraction-induced wrinkles. While each has a slightly different formula of the same substance (bacterium Clostridium Botulinum or Botulinum Toxin A), they all work the same way – blocking the nerve impulses of the injected muscles to temporarily paralyze muscle movements that cause wrinkles. The most common targets include horizontal lines across the forehead, perpendicular frown lines between the brows, crow’s feet, nasal squint lines, lines around the neck, eyebrow lifting, and even profuse underarm sweating and migraines.
How They’re Different
- The main difference between Xeomin and Botox/Dysport is that Xeomin contains only one ingredient – Botulinum Toxin A
- The manufacturing process is slightly different in all three, which leads to some potential, subtle differences in clinical practice.
- Xeomin is a “naked injectable”, meaning that it does not contain any additives. A benefit of a pure-form injectable is that the human body is less likely to become resistant to it. Some patients have developed antibodies to Botox and Dysport.
According to Dr. Debra Wattenberg, a cosmetic dermatologist in New York City, “They are all very similar. In certain situations, one may get a slightly different reaction versus the other. I personally think Dysport has a little bit more diffusion, which is better for correcting a lot of crow’s feet because it has a more even distribution. But if I need to make a small correction of a rogue wrinkle, I usually use Botox. In general, I use all three of them all interchangeably.”
All three procedures are safe for all skin types and skin colors, however they should only be administered by a highly qualified medical professional.
