Our Florida summers are very long and very hot, and the likelihood of getting a sunburn at some point is pretty much inevitable…no matter how much time and effort you spend applying layer upon layer of sunscreen! Our skin experts offer tips on how to treat sunburnt skin. Read more….
Sunburn Prevention
You can spend all the money in the world on skincare treatments, but beautiful skin starts with the basics…sunscreen, sunscreen, and more sunscreen. Not only does it help prevent premature aging, it plays a major role in the prevention of sunburn.
At Skin NV, we always encourage our clients to wear SPF 30 or higher E.V.E.R.Y.D.A.Y. We carry several lines of medical-grade products, suitable to meet the various needs of each skin type. Some of which include:
Heliocare: You can prevent sunburn with a daily dose of antioxidant-loaded Heliocare Supplements – in stock and readily available for pick up at our South Tampa med spa!
Fernblock® PLE Technology: This sunscreen harnesses the power of the unique Polypodium leucotomos fern which helps protect your skin from sun exposure while also maintaining its resilience and youthful appearance.
Clear Choice Sport Shield SPF 45: This powerful combination of sunblock and light moisturizer is formulated with replenishing vitamins and antioxidants.
Powder Shield SPF 30: You’ll love this transparent, silky, oil-free powder that will protect your skin from sun exposure and dehydration.
Elta MD: This line of sunscreen helps prevent sunburn and decreases the risk of skin cancer. All Elta MD sunscreens are formulated with transparent zinc oxide and are noncomedogenic, sensitivity-free, fragrance-free, and paraben-free.
MD Solar Science: This line of physical block, broad spectrum sunscreens contain a high percentage of Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. In addition, it is fragrance free, paraben free, and quick drying.
Sunburn Treatments
When sunburns happen, we recommend the following treatments for each level of sunburn:
Mild Sunburn: Apply aloe vera, a natural healing ingredient which is great for alleviating pain and discomfort caused by sunburn.
Moderate Sunburn: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NAIDs), such as Ibuprofen, provide relief from pain and swelling after a sunburn. Just make sure to check with your primary care physician before you apply NSAIDs as they are blood thinners and may not work well with other prescriptions.
Extreme Sunburn: This can be extremely painful and could potentially lead to scarring if not treated properly! For extreme sunburn, we suggest:
- Staying out of the sun until your skin has fully healed.
- Applying a hydrocortisone cream that will relieve pain and heal raw skin.
- If your sunburn leads to blisters, DO NOT touch them! Popping or picking at blisters can only increase the risk of scarring.
